Seattle Sounders and Their Social Media Road to Toronto to #DefendOurCup
Yes, we might already be in December – which means cold weather and lots of basketball, football, and hockey – but one sport is still going strong — soccer. The MLS Cup Finals is tomorrow, Saturday, December 9 with #1 Toronto FC versus #2 Seattle Sounders (and defending champs) in Toronto.
Both teams have been buzzing all week on social media – with videos, images, and GIFs on the anticipation and excitement leading up to the Championship, but the Sounders have been doing a full on social media press with the hashtag #DefendOurCup – chronicling their road to Toronto. Not only have the Sounders made a point to have their jersey sponsor XBOX prominent in most photos, but they’ve also used clever messaging.
And, it’s worked.
Twitter growth since December 1 has increased by more than 5,000 followers, most noticeably after the MLS Cup Semi-Finals again the Houston Dynamo.
Since December 1, XBOX has had more than 150,000 engagements on social media (via the Sounders official social handles and those of their fans) for an earned media value of more than $35,000.
