The Magic of 33: How Fernando Alonso has Raced Ahead on Social Media
At 41, Fernando Alonso is enjoying a great start to the 2023 Formula 1 season aboard Aston Martin. After four rounds in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Azerbaijan, the two-time Formula 1 champion has scored three podium finishes and a fourth place in Azerbaijan.
Off the track, Alonso is having some fun becoming a social media phenomenon, especially on TikTok. Lately, there’s been whispers that Alonso and US singer Taylor Swift are in a relationship, and he has joked about it and shared videos with Swift songs, including “Karma.”
By the way, do you know how old Taylor Swift is? 33.
33, how come 33?
If Alonso wins this weekend in Miami, it will be his 33rd F1 victory. The two-time world champion has 12.5 million followers, more than 45% of which come from his Instagram, where he has 5.7 million. Since 2023 began, Alonso has added more than 800,000 new followers on Instagram, but the social network where he’s seen the most growth is TikTok, with more than one million new followers year-to-date.

Alonso’s arrival at Aston Martin and his first tests of the season triggered hype around his fans, who started seeing number 33 everywhere and turned that number into a fun, amusing source of memes.

Media companies, teams, and athletes have also posted about the elusive 33rd victory for Alonso.
Spanish athletes have fun with Alonso’s 33
After Carlos Alcaraz’s round of 16 win at the Miami Open, he signed the camera lens with a “33, soon?” and exchanged messages on social media with Fernando Alonso. Spanish New Orleans Pelicans player Willy Hernangómez also showed his support for Alonso by wearing an Aston Martin T-shirt at the entrance to the stadium and shared the image on social media with his more than 500,000 followers.
